When I was five years old my parents decided to immigrate to Portugal. My childhood and teen-age years were spent discovering this fascinating land. A land that could be described as a kaleidoscope of colours, smells, sounds, warmth and spontaneity. All of this has left a deep impression on my life.
These emotions I have tried to express in my work. Not only the emotions, but also the theme of my work I have received from this southern paradise. The Baroque Spanish Portuguese horse became the passion of my heart. When I would see such a majestic horse, it was as though time stood still, everything faded around me, and all I was aware of, was its perfect beauty, the restrained power, the uncontrollable freedom mirrored in its eyes, each heartbeat, each vibration, each blink. I absorbed it, I drank it in. The way the horse breathed, the vibration of its nostrils, I knew how it felt.
Because of this enormous passion for horses, I found myself using whatever I could lay my hands on to express it. I doodled, sketched, painted and moulded horses, on notepads, placemats, pieces of paper all shapes and sizes, misty car windows, mud, snow and wet sand all of the above were useable ingredients to set my creativity flowing.
My focus has not remained with the horse alone. I recognized the Designer and Creator of the horse, the One who is the Creator of All life. I think, when someone is conscious of life and works with art, there comes a point where one starts to realise that there must be more to life.
As I read in Song of Songs, a ancient book in the Bible, written by King Solomon, I discovered the 'love of God', as well as the 'God of love', which also has become a theme for my sculptures. This book describes a relationship of passion and desire between two lovers. You can take this literally, as well as seeing the heart of God desiring an intimate relationship with mankind.
In trying to express the fragility and intensity of two lovers, I have moulded the sculpture, without trying to reason it out in my mind, in order to let life and spontaneity flow thru. The most beautiful thing is, I see it originate in my own hands. Every time again it is an adventure, the end not yet in sight. I am amazed at how it develops, and that is what I enjoy most.
For me art is like an echo of divine passion and that is what I want to express.
